About OCD and Why SSRI’s are Important?

As one who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder I think that I qualify to give a little information that may just save you a great deal of pain and aggravation down the road. It is true that once you have OCD you have it for life. But the good news is, it can be managed by taking extra doses of SSRI’s or serotonin which your brain is lacking.

According to Wikipedia SSRI’s are described as Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors or serotonin-specific reuptake inhibitor[1] (SSRIs) are a class of compounds typically used as antidepressants in the treatment of depressionanxiety disorders, and some personality disorders.

Now to clarify what serotonin is, it is a neurotransmitter emitted from the brain to send messages to the rest of the body. Serotonin in not in foods but is in Tryptophan which when injested into the body creates serotonin simply by mixing with all the other chemicals within the body as the food synthesizes with all the other digestive enzymes and chemicals within your body. This neurotransmitter is like the sparking action of a spark plug. If you have ever studied the brain, you would come to understand that the distance between 2 cells is called a synapse which is the distance the neurotransmitter has to travel from one cell to the next to send messages. Believe it or not over 1 million messages travel within one second period of time from one cell to the next. So you can see how important it is to build up your serotonin level if it is low. It is absolutely imperative.

The following foods contain Tryptophan which is what is needed to create Serotonin within your body. Farm fresh eggs or high quality eggs not eggs that have been sitting on the shelf of your grocer’s freezer for a while, turkey, bananas, kiwi, walnuts, flaxseed and flaxseed oil, buckweat, whole grains, wild rice and brown rice and black chocolate to name a few.

So if you are a person suffering from depression or obsessive compulsive disorder then you must start eating more of the previously mentioned food groups. On top of that you need to start exercising more. I am not just talking about a 10 minute walk a day either. At least 1/2 hour to an hour a day you have to start doing an exercise that works up a sweat. Like jogging, fast walking, riding a bicycle, aerobics and or dance classes, swimming etc.  The best Natural Healing of all is exercise and there are 3 main reasons why? First of all it is the best remedy for weight-loss. To lose weight effectively you have to be involved in a daily exercise routine.

Second, exercise leads to working up a sweat and by doing so you are ridding your body of all the toxins that have built up over time. Toxins slow down your metabolism not to mention are harmful to most organs of the human body by not allowing them to do what they were intended to do. Again we are talking about Natural Healing, for your body to naturally heal you must eliminate all toxins and poisons.

Thirdly by working up a sweat through exercise you are creating a vast amount of oxygen which is so needed for the brain, cells, blood, heart, organs etc. etc. etc. When you exercise your body pumps blood readily more throughout the human body. Red blood cells reproduce themselves every 60 to 90 days and with the cell rejuvenation comes fresh oxygen to the blood. So in a sense you are sending fresh oxygen throughout the body through exercise. And an oxygen rich body is usually a healthy body.
